5 Signs Your Child May Need Braces

Braces Burbank, CA

Think your child will need braces so they can have the straight teeth? Crooked teeth are harder to clean, making it easier for cavity-causing bacteria to hide. If these bacteria are not removed from the mouth, then they will start eating away at the tooth’s enamel, which is what protects the teeth.

Once the teeth are no longer protected, it is only a matter of time before damage is done to the teeth, with cavities and gum disease being two of the more common types of oral issues found in children today.

Why early prevention is a good idea

The sooner a child receives dental services, the better their chances of experiencing good oral health for the rest of their lives. When oral problems are not treated in a timely manner, it is simply going to be much more difficult to fix them at a later time.

The following is a list of five signs that can let parents know that their child may be in need of braces. The suggested age for children’s braces is normally between the ages of nine and 14.

Sign #1 crooked teeth

While minimally crooked teeth in children may not be an issue, as they may straighten out as they continue to grow in, if the teeth are very crooked, then braces are likely to be used in order to straighten out the teeth.

Sign #2 difficulty chewing

When a child has difficulty chewing their food, it often means that their teeth have grown in incorrectly, which will require braces in order to correct

Sign #3 an overcrowded mouth

Sometimes, there simply is not enough room in a child’s mouth to accommodate all their permanent teeth, which causes the teeth to be crowded and therefore, crooked. While braces can help move the teeth into their correct position, understand that in some cases, one or two teeth will need to be extracted in order for a child to not have an overcrowded mouth.

Sign #4 a crossbite

A crossbite refers to a situation where the upper teeth and the lower teeth do not come together properly. It is important for children to get braces as soon as possible in this situation, as a crossbite can also cause them to have jaw problems.

Sign #5 protruding teeth

When the front upper teeth stick out too far, they can cause a multitude of oral problems, requiring braces to correct.
